Lesson Information and Studio Policies

Basic Information

  • SBSMA is open to all students, regardless of ability. Young students must be at least 5 1/2 years old. 

  • Lessons are 30 minutes, once a week. When registering, we will give you a list of available times. Some teachers do offer longer lesson times, ie. 45 or 60 minutes.

  • We teach classical and jazz piano, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, voice, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, and viola. Music composition and music theory lessons are also offered.

  • All style of music are taught, including classical, jazz, rock, pop, country, and blues.

  • Lessons are private and will be geared toward your needs and goals. Students will learn proper technique and musicianship for their instrument.

  • The majority of teachers offer consultations, where you and your student can meet with the teacher and get a chance to know them. Trial lessons are free and non-committal.

Tuition and Pricing

  • Tuition starts at $160 / month for four 30-minute lessons. 

  • A one-time registration fee of $15 is due at your first lesson.

  • Payment is accepted in cash or check made payable to South Bay School of Music Arts or SBSMA. 

  • Tuition is due at the first lesson of every month.

  • A late charge of $10 is applied to any payment made after the 7th of a given month.

Performance Opportunities

  • Performance is an important aspect of learning any instrument. At SBSMA, we offer numerous opportunities throughout the year for students to showcase their improvements.

  • Performances are held in the school, and are free to participate in.

  • Online recitals are offered for students learning remotely.

Materials

  • Material needs will naturally be different depending on your instrument.

  • Your teacher will tell you what materials you need for your lesson and where to purchase the materials.

  • For piano students, a keyboard of at least 61 keys is recommended, but instruments with 88 weighted keys are highly encouraged.
