History

South Bay School of Music Arts was first opened in 1984 by co-owners Joe Santoro and Deborah Goldstein. Though the school began with only 90 students, today it serves hundreds of students in Milpitas and the surrounding area.

The years after the opening saw the creation of the Student Concert Series, the Honors Program, and the Studio Bands Project, with SBSMA student bands and vocal groups performing at fairs and festivals throughout the Bay Area. Click here for more information about this program.

In 1989 the first jazz ensembles were formed, followed by a wind ensemble in 1990. These ensembles perform at community events multiple times throughout the year.

More recently, the school celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Studio Bands Project. 2011 also saw the school's first scholarship program, and in 2012 South Bay Big Band Jazz had its first performance at the San Jose Summer Jazz Festival.

At SBSMA, we are committed to continuing the legacy of the school, and are excited to share future plans moving forward!
